GROUND SCHOOL

Program & Requirements

The Directorate of the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority requires that all Private Pilot ground subject examination candidates complete a minimum of 100 hours tuition. In order to meet this requirement, Pegasus expects the student to attend approximately 36 hours of formal tuition, the remainder being completed by the student as a self study component.

It is necessary for Pegasus Flyers to complete a form confirming that you have fulfilled the required study time and that you are ready to carry out the examinations. Your Ground School Instructor will be able to determine if the self study portion has been achieved by evaluating your knowledge as the formal sessions progress and by successful completion of a “mock” examination.

Initially, your instruction on flying training, principles of flight and the aircraft will be covered by your flying instructor during your pre-flight briefings. He will also assign material from the manuals to read before your next flying lesson. Pegasus Flyers Flying Instructors and Ground School Instructors co-ordinate your ground studies with your actual flying instruction so that your flying experience is enhanced and the theory becomes an interesting integral part of obtaining your license.

EXAMINATIONS

Before applying to KCAA to take your Ground School examinations KCAA require that you have done five hours solo cross country flights. The Ground School examinations must be successfully passed within six months of your General Flight test. We recommend that you try and complete them before your flight test so that you can get them out of the way and be fully prepared for the flight test and any questions the examiner may ask.

You will have to write a separate examination for your radiotelephony license. The Club has also instituted some additional requirements into the curriculum to ensure your safety and confidence in the air. The major requirement is that you have your Radiotelephony Operator’s License before you do your first solo cross country flight. This greatly enhances your safety in the air.

All examinations are held by the KCAA and you will have to book and pay for them at the KCAA Licensing office. The examinations are held at the East African School of Aviation in Embakasi, on the 1st and 4th Friday of each month and all subjects are written on the same day. Examinations must be applied for at least 7 days in advance.

You will be required to complete examinations covering the following subjects: -
